John Hickenlooper signed into law this week plan to stage a protest in Grand Junction Saturday when he speaks at Club 20′s annual spring meeting.
Hickenlooper, a Democrat, was moved to act after shootings at an Aurora theater last July and a Connecticut elementary school in December.
Former Colorado Gov. Bill Owens, a Republican, in 2000 supported an initiative requiring background checks at gun shows, a measure introduced in reaction to the shootings at Columbine High School. Gun-rights activists booed Owens at the Republican state convention that year.
