Denver Councilman Albus Brooks was awarded the 2013 Marshall Memorial Fellowship along with three other Denver-area leaders — Major Thomas Heier of the U.S. Air Force; Janet Lopez of the Rose Community Foundation; and Leslie Oliver, policy director for U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter.
The fellowship — which over the years has been awarded to high-profile leaders including Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, State Sen. Michael Johnston and former Colorado House Speaker Terrance Carroll — takes the fellows on a 24-day trip across Europe to learn about the institutions and people who drive Europe’s cities, regions and countries.
The Institute for Public Policy Studies at the University of Denver is the regional coordinator for the Marshall Fellowship. The 2013 fellows were announced on Wednesday.
The program began in 1982 when the inaugural group of German Fellows visited the United States. The program now includes fellows from 23 European countries and the United States. The program attracts the “best and the brightest from all sectors, including politics, media, business and nongovernmental organizations,” according to a press release issued on Wednesday.
